With the history spanning over 2600 years, Sri Lanka embraces some of the World’s ancient cities like Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa & Kandy, which are also considered as UNESCO world heritage sites.

Anuradhapura is the first Kingdom of the Island and is well known for its religious & cultural values. This is a sacred city for World Buddhists as the world’s oldest Bo tree, the Shri Maha Bodhi, a branch of the sacred Bo tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment can be observed. The civilization that was build up in Anuradhapura was knitted between the tanks, dagabas (pagodas) & temples. Anuradhapura served as the capital for 119 kings until it was moved to Polonnaruwa in 1000 A.D.

Sigiriya is a 5th century AD rock fortress, well designed for its defense with ramparts and moats built around. This has ruins of a palace & some of the oldest murals found in the country.

Galle is another popular tourist attraction in the Southern Province. This has a 400 year old Dutch Fort & several other historical buildings like The Dutch Government House, Queen’s House in the British era, old Dutch warehouses and many more.

3rd, 4th and 5th night – Sigriya

Sigiriya is famous for its Rock Fortress which can be identified even from miles away due to its unique shape. This is a historical and an archaeological site with relatively sophisticated engineering, architecture, urban planning, gardening, hydraulic technology & art.

This fortress is well designed with ramparts & moats & from the top can be watched upto ten miles making it difficult for the enemy to give any surprise attacks.

King Kassapa had made his kingdom an ecological wonder by creating Royal Pleasure Gardens, fountains, water & boulder gardens & about 500 rock paintings of which remains about 21 frescoes today.

6th and 7th night – Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya was the favorite location of the British when ruling Sri Lanka from 1815 – 1948. This was also known as “Little England” & they created the present Hill Club hotel which was a former country house with hunting pictures & formal dinner attire, the 18 hole golf course, the race course, etc.,

The area is home to red tile roofed houses, hotels, boutiques, ramparts & its iconic lighthouse.
